How Bad Are Things in the US?

There's always a lot of talk about changing things to make the American education system stronger and to get test scores up in areas like math and science. I've heard about how bad the US economy is getting, but never imagined how bad it actually is. Starbucks is closing outlets around the US, taxes are being hiked, everything's being affected by oil prices, and then I saw this: Schools Eye Four Day Week to Cut Fuel Costs. The article stated "about 100 schools in as many as 16 states have already moved to a four-day school week, many to save money on transportation, heating and cooling."

Wow! Americans are letting gas prices effect their children's education? They aren't willing to pay higher taxes? Or start to seriously explore other energy options? This is truly sad.
